Tips for Troubleshooting Symbian OS/S60 Smartphones
8 January 2007
If you have a sneaking suspicion that your phone is running slower than before, you might consider recycling it, taking it to a service center, or slowing the pace of your life to sync with your phone. We have a better solution. Learn to look inside your phone and determine if any foul play is going on in there. Check out our tips for troubleshooting S60 smartphones, like the Nokia N-series and E-series devices.
The following tips are intended for situations when your phone runs considerably slower than before, occasionally freezes, you see error messages about low memory, applications that used to run won't run anymore, or you believe the phone is behaving oddly in some other way.
How to troubleshoot a Symbian OS/S60 smartphone
The tips 1-3 are intended for all users. We recommend tips 4-6 for experienced users only. If anything goes wrong in steps 4-6, you may lose some information or software products from your phone.

1. Restart the phone
Switch off the power, or remove the battery if the phone has completely frozen. Turn on the power and let the operating system take its time to restart. The purpose of this action is to clean the memory from any potentially misbehaving applications. Besides, a smartphone is often regarded as more complex device than a home PC, and most people restart their PC at least once a day.
2. Backup information stored on the phone
There maybe plenty of important information stored on your phone. Unless you are regularly backing it up to your PC using PC Suite or some other application, do it now.
You can also use a memory card as a backup media. In order to back up pictures, videos, and music, launch the Gallery application. It is usually located in the Main Menu. Once Gallery is running, choose Images, Videos or Music section. Open Options, select Organise (or Move and Copy), and Move to Memory Card.

An excellent way to back up and restore contacts and calendar is to sign up for the free Zyb service that lets you sync the information over the air, whenever and wherever you want.
3. Monitor applications running on the phone
You can list the applications running on your phone by pushing and holding down the menu key. The menu key is the button with two arches and dots (see the picture). Usually you would push the menu key to switch between the telephone screen and the main menu screen.
When you want to use the key as a task manager to switch between any application that's running on your phone, hold the menu key down. A small list will appear on the screen. You can scroll up and down the list and push select to switch to the highlighted application. If you can spot an application in the list that you haven't started yourself, you should find out why it is there.

4. Remove unnecessary applications
It is easy to discover the applications installed in your system and remove those you don't need. You can free a considerable amount of memory by doing so. Launch the Application Manager: go to the Main Menu, open Tools folder, and launch App Manager (Manager, or App Mgr).
You can remove an application by highlighting it, opening Options and selecting Remove. Be careful! You have to know what applications you need now or later. Some applications, like the Search utility, consist of several installed components. If you remove any component, the application won't run anymore.

5. Check the amount of available memory
To find out what exactly is eating up the memory on your phone, launch the File Manager. Go to the Main Menu, open the Tools folder, and open File Mgr. Make sure that the left-side tab at the top of the screen is highlighted (you can move from tab to tab with the left and right navigation keys). You want to see the status of the memory inside the phone, not the status of the memory card (it is the right-side tab). Push Options, and select Memory details.
If the amount of free memory is less than two megabytes (2000 KB), you should clean items from the phone memory. Use Application Manager to remove applications and File Manager to delete pictures, videos, or music that may take a lot of space. Again, be careful! Once the files are gone, you have to live without them. In File Manager, highlight the file you want to delete, open Options and select Delete.

6. Update the factory-installed software
The last resort for curing a troubled Symbian OS/S60 smartphone is to completely revamp the firmware (the software stored on non-erasable memory that typically includes low-level system programs) that was installed into the device at the factory. Download the Nokia Software Updater on your PC for updating the phone firmware. If you want to know the current version of your phone firmware, switch to the telephone screen and tap *#0000#.

This operation is similar to formatting the hard disk on your computer. The software update will wipe out everything from the phone memory and replace the memory with a new software release. This means that all your information (for instance, contacts, photos, messages) and settings (e-mail configuration, all your own ringtones) you have stored on your phone memory will disappear. Items stored on a memory card won't be affected.
All the tools presented here are included with the Nokia S60 smartphones. We frequently use them and trust them, knowing that the tools really don't require a degree in software or hardware hacking. Still, it is possible that something goes wrong if you follow the tips 4-6. If you are unsure about yourself, consider taking the phone to a service center.

Could you post info regarding upgrading memory. I recently bought a Kingston 2GB card and have successfully transferred all the info on the supplied 64MB card using Nokia PC Suite, unfortunately with the exception of the Symbian OS components Symantec, Quickoffice,Info Print,Wireless Keyboard and Adobe Reader. In Tools, Manager these applications are shown as being on the memory card but won't transfer unlike the other data stored on the card. Is this some sort of copyright issue?
Ari 22.01.2007 09:59
If you use Windows Explorer instead of the PC Suite, you get full control over the files you want to transfer. Some new Symbian phones show up as disk drives on a Windows PC when you plug the USB cable from your phone to the PC. Then, launch Windows Explorer. Copy the contents of the memory card into a temporary folder. Change the new memory card into the phone and copy the files to the new card. If your phone doesn't show up as a disk drive on your PC, you need a memory card reader. Plug in the memory card reader to your PC. Remove the memory card from the phone and stick into the reader. Now, you can copy the files from the card to your hard disk. More about using memory cards as transfer media here: http://www.avecmobile.com/index.php?id=536

I have had the N73 for about 6 months now and its a great phone. However, over the last week it is telling me that I have no memory and need to delete some files. Ive looked on the memory card and I have about 800mb free, and I look at the phone memory and it says about 200kb left. Somehow, 47mb is used up. I look through file manager, no pictures, videos etc it only holds calender and texts. the summary adds up to about 2mb, and there is clearly a random 45mb being added on to fill it. Any ideas??
Ari 06.04.2007 04:58
Tom, did you view the list of installed applications that the Application Manager can show you? For example, Yahoo Go alone can take megabytes of memory space. Remove applications that you don't need.

I have had an N70 for a while now and am due an upgrade soon but the phone won't let me access my messaging inbox now. I try to access it and I get a message 'Messaging: Memory Full. Close some applications and try again' I have deleted and closed every application! Looking at the memory status I only have a small ammount free and a majority of it is taken up by messages but I can't access my inbox to delete them! Is there any way i can wipe them from somewhere else on the phone. Any help would be much apprechiated.
bizy 09.04.2007 08:39
Reflashing your phone is a dramatic measure, but it works. Nokia Software Updater resets your phone to its original state and updates the latest operating system software. The downside it that you lose everything you have saved or installed in your phone memory.
Jake Cowens 06.05.2007 13:42
I have a Nokia N73 and i cant recive songs via bluetooth as it sends to the phone memory and this is all used up. How do i get the phone to save things straight to the memory card???
Ari 07.05.2007 08:50
Jake, everything received via Bluetooth is saved into the Inbox which resides in the phone memory. You should free some phone memory so that there's enough space for receiving songs via Bluetooth. Once the song has been saved in Inbox, move it to the memory card and delete it from the Inbox.

I have Memory Full! Problem with my Nokia N73 All of the time using the gallery. Camera is sluggish, takes 5 seconds to initialise every time. This has the latest firmware upgrade by Carphone Warehouse in May 2007. On checking the Phone memory I have 37MB free. I have few thousand map images on my memory card and it still has 300MB free space. Some how the OS has a series problem with large amount of data stored on memory card. The gallery stops working completely. ie kept throwing "Memory Full !" even with all the free space... ( I had EXACTLY the same problem when I used Nokia N70 ). Having said that , If I remove all map images from my memory card, the phone performace is more acceptable. Not sure if anyone can help?
Ari 09.06.2007 08:31
Mike, you've probably discovered a limitation in the OS file system. It looks like the Gallery application considerably slows down when there are more than 1000 files (images) in one folder. When I split the files into two folders, the performance improved considerably. So, if you can, copy less than 1000 files in each folder on your memory card.
Mike 09.06.2007 09:59
Thanks Ari, I will see if I can reduce my map folders to
Mike 09.06.2007 10:00
Thanks Ari, I will see if I can reduce my map folders to less than 1000 images each. Will be a pain as have 2-3000 map images in each folder... Would be great if S60 doesnt scan the entire memory card willy nilly unecessarily, just scan the folders we tell it to.. The performance affects the entire phone functions , not just the memory. Open anu application, memory goes ,and 65% of time needs a reboot. because S60 is so busy scanning for images or something, no one tells it to do. Nice OS but the developers need to tidy this highly inefficient bit up. Iam planning upgrade to N95, but I think it will be jus the same ( still S60)!!

hi, my messages are full 20mb as much as my phone memory and it wont let me delete anything .. what can i do
Ari 30.06.2007 00:21
Try to save as much information from the phone as you can with the PC Suite software that you install on your PC. Then, if nothing else helps, you may erase the whole phone memory by loading the latest software to the phone. You can do it yourself(Nokia Software Updater) or take your phone to a service center.

hey i have got a 6681.the memory card is write protected.how do i remove that???
Ari 02.08.2007 02:13
The MMC memory cards that's used in the 6681 don't come with a mechanical write-protection tab. Perhaps the card has been protected with a password or formatted in an incompatible device? Try to format the card on the phone (launch the Memory card application) or insert the card into a memory card reader and use a PC to reformat it.

alexey 06.09.2007 02:55
guys - if you have installed the new firmware to your N73 with the Nokia software updater, the phone memory has been completely erased. All yuor messages and logs should have disapperaed and there should be plenty of free memory space.

Nataly 17.09.2007 23:27
tracie, can you read the memory card on a PC? If you can't, the problem is in the card.
AJ 20.09.2007 18:01
my n70 responds very slow while browsing thru menus. i've heard somewhere that using a smaller memorycard would help so i m using a 512mb card rite now (i used to have 1gb), but still no change in performance. what else could be the problem?
Harsh 25.09.2007 13:49
Hello folks, Harsh here. I've been using N73 ME since last 6 months. My issue is that I cant delete the themes from the Themes Application. In help it says, 'Browse to the theme n thn press C button'.. But nothing actually happens. Even in Application Manager there are limited options available. I want to know how can we delete the unwanted applications and themes that are not available in App Mgr? in Y-Browser too i doesnt show the Themes folder. So, is there any other 3rd party software available or nething else that I cud do!.. Thanks awaiting reply!
mattk 25.09.2007 22:04
harsh, Activefile lets you explore the whole file system.Maybe you can find the themes folder: http://developer.symbian.com/wiki/display/devtools/ActiveFile

Hi..I downloaded and installed the Nokia Software Updater on my PC. But whenever I try to upgrade my N73 ME, it correctly detects my model and the existing firmware version(3.0705.1.0.31) and gives the message "No software updates available. There is no update available for your current software version. Try again later." I checked and found that the current software version is 4.0727.2.2.1 . Any advice on what I can do ? Thanks in advance.....

Hi, I have a nokia model 6103. A few months ago, a friend sent me a couple of ringtones via bluetooth. Well, those songs are now old and outdated so I'm tried to delete them and my phone won't let me. There isn't even a "delete" button for me to select. What's the deal? I need the memory for some new ringtones, but I can't add them until I delete the old ones. I would appreciate any help!
Ari 30.09.2007 00:07
Hi Gab, first, make sure that you have removed the ringtones from the Inbox. If you can't delete the ringtones via the menu system, you can try the PC Suite software. If you have a data cable for your phone, hook it up to your PC. PC Suite lets you manage your phone from the PC.

Hi, Can you pls tell me why some part of phone memory always in use??? For eg 12 MB of phone memory is in use but all your applications on phone memory doesnt constitute to 12 MB... My free memory in phone (Nokia N70) is 6928 KB.. but it does not allow me to save audio songs( size > 2MB) that i recieve through bluetooth... It says the following error "Music player memory not enough"... Can anyone please help me with it????
Ari 18.01.2008 00:46
Narmadha, you have discovered the Inbox-issue. All messages you receive via Bluetooth, email, MMS, or SMS, are stored in Inbox. The Inbox resides in phone's internal memory. When you open a large, e.g. 2MB message, the phone needs additional memory space for displaying the photo or playing the song. Since you have more than 6MB of memory available, the phone should be able to open the file, but you have to save it on a memory card - not in the phone's internal memory space. The best solution for copying large files to the phone is to use a memory card: http://www.avecmobile.com/index.php?id=536

Hi, am wondering if anyone could help? I'm currently using N81 8GB. All was fine and dandy until I tried syncing a new batch of songs in (had 1200 songs before, tried to load in 200 more - all mp4 files). My phone wouldn't read them - I've tried restarting, refreshing, copying and uncopying them like a gazillion times already. I have about 2GB free space left after copying everything in. Also, when I try to delete songs, I can't. A "System Error" message will appear.
mattk 24.03.2008 05:49
Rachel, do you have all songs in one folder? If that's the case, you may have too many files in one folder. I think I saw somewhere that there's a restriction of about 1000 files per folder in Symbian S60. Maybe someone has more accurate info on this...
jhay 05.04.2008 06:36
hi i have n73 m.e. it is a good phone but im having a problem with the phone memory it says that i have not enough memory in my phone mem. delete some data i have a 2gig mem card. i dont save application on phone memory but it always come to a full phone memory it happens every 3 days or 4..i always format my n73 phone memory..i hope you can help me...
kenwol 06.04.2008 09:39
jhay, try and remove messages and photos from your phone. This way, you'll get free internal memory space. Formatting the memory only erases the data from the memory card, not from the phone's internal storage.
kenwol 06.04.2008 12:14

i got a nokia N70 and has been working well for me for the past year except for some problems with the memory card, it often gets corrupted. i am ok with it now since i already reformatted it, however just a while ago i was trying to connect my phone to the computer via the Nokia PC Suite and it won't connect. And then i tried to use the camera and it would just display the pic taken and that's it. i can't access my Gallery now and my camera as well. what do i do? can you possibly tell me what happened?
ultimer 22.04.2008 23:57
rob - have you checked that your phone's internal memory isn't full??

Hey! I have a Nokia N91 8GB Music Edition phone. The problem with it is it hangs when I type *111# which is used to check the account balance for Vodafone mobiles. The phone hangs and restarts. After the restart, the code works for sometime and again the problem persists. It doesn't even show the last call charge after a call or message. I tried formatting the phone memory and hard drive memory. The problem still persists. Please help! Thanks!
markbr 03.05.2008 04:22

janice 14.05.2008 09:13
my n73 gives me a lot of problems. it says that the internal memory is full even though i have deleted everything in the phone already. is there any way out?
ismail 15.05.2008 03:22
janice - the last thing u can try is to re-flash the phone software with Nokia software updater. there is a side-effect. it erases everything you have saved in the phone.
thanz 16.05.2008 23:25
rohit, you said you've reformat your memory card, by doing this you've deleted nokia firmware,(lifeblog, setting wizard, online sharing, search, etc.) which is installed in your mmc, try install it,
thanz 16.05.2008 23:32

hi.. i use n70.. my problem is, i only have around 400kb left in my phone memory although i know i deleted a lot..the calendars messages, etc won't match up to the amount of my supposed to be left memory - i'm supposed to have a bigger space.. i guess the reason is.. i download lots of themes and some other apps, i have deleted lots of them and i even have only 3 themes left.. now their names don't appear anymore in the app manager but if i click 'view log' on the options.. i could see that LOTS of my themes have a status of still being installed.. can you help me? what should i do with this.. how can i delete 'em? THANK YOU so much! :)

Hi, I have solved the low memory warning in my Nokia n73 music edition, it often happens when we connect our mobile to an affected pc, then some attributed hidden viruses effects the mobile.......... To remove these viruses from ur mobile just dial *#7370#, then restore original setting message appears, select yes, give lock code, by default lock code for nokia is 12345. Then it will restart, and ur mobile will get the actual speed with no low memory warning message. Caution: Pls save all ur data before restoration.... backup in memory card or in pc..........
rico 13.02.2009 00:23
zafran - you could also re-flash the phone software. in the process, you get the latest upgrades as well

giobemo 24.01.2010 05:35
I'm having the same problem as kero. The red star by the bluetooth icon is normal, I know, it just means it hassn't been opened yet. The problem is my phone now won't open ANY files sent via bluetooth. I've tried both .doc and .sis files. If I move them to a system folder using x-plore then I can open them with no problem, but non will open directly from the inbox folder...
hamish 04.02.2010 23:01
guys, a large attachment file in the inbox is a problem. my phone seems to require double the space of the file. i believe the os makes a copy of the file.

Miro, if your phone's internal memory is full or near full, it won't work.
Kate 13.05.2010 04:26
The N series s60 phones have Lifeblog application which cannot be removed by App Mgr and even YBrowers is tricky. Lifeblog is automatic replication of ALL multimedia, which is a constant background save - sapping all the internal phone memory. I never used Lifeblog so now it has over 7650 items in it that cannot be transferred to PC (tried) or manually deleted (tried) even though my phone has been completely reset and all multimedia removed. LIFEBLOG killed my N95.
jen 14.05.2010 01:43
Kate, disable automatic sync between your pc and N95

I need these pictures as its a day we will never get back. Can somebody advise me PLEASE???
lifeblog 29.05.2010 03:21
unhappy bunny, pull out the memory card from your phone, stick it into your PC and explore the folders on the card. It is possible you discover your videos from the memory card.
