Nokia 6230
The Nokia 6230 has been a popular product and the upgraded model 6230i is trying to continue its success. Digital camera, MP3 player, FM radio, extensive local connectivity options and a removable memory card make this small, classic-style phone a multi-purpose device for photo snappers, music lovers and avid message writers.
Key features: The biggest differences between the original Nokia 6230 and the upgraded 6230i are: camera resolution (1.3 megapixels for the 6230i and 0.3 for the 6230), screen resolution (208x208 pixels for the 6230i and 128x128 for the 6230) and internal memory space (32MB for the 6230i and 6MB for the 6230).
There's plenty of music in this phone: FM radio, MP3 music player and polyphonic and MP3 ringtones. When you want to tune into your favorite radio stations, you connect the included earphones into the phone. The music player software can play AAC and MP3 songs and they can be set as ringtones as well.
Hi-Fi purists are not likely to find the audio quality of Nokia 6230 (well, they probably don't like any phone's audio quality) good, but when you listen to the music with headphones, the quality is fine for occasional sessions. We don't expect a mid-category phone like this to be able to replace an iPod, or Creative Zen as your principal music player, but when the dedicated music player is not around, this phone can provide you with the music you need on the move.
An MMC memory card is included in the package, which is good news for those who want to copy MP3 or AAC music from their computers to the phone.
The Nokia 6230i comes with an 1.3 megapixel digital camera that lets you record video clips as well. The picture quality in the camera is not competitive against the best 1 megapixel camera phones. The color screen on the Nokia 6230i looks very nice, primarily because the physical size of the display is small and the resolution 208x208 pixels is relatively high for such a small display.
MMS photo messages, email and instant messaging are available for sending and receiving photos, videos, ringtones and other messages. It is also possible to download Java applications to the phone.
Bluetooth wireless connectivity and an infrared port are available on the unit and you can also use a USB cable for connecting to your computer.
The Nokia 6230 and 6230i are tri-band GSM phones with GPRS and EDGE technologies for data communications. Data transfer by EDGE is fast, but it is not available from every network operator.
Who likes this product: The extensive and balanced functionality make this phone a versatile product for many applications. On the other hand, its audio and image quality are mediocre, a reminder that this is a still a mid-category phone.
Style: The Nokia 6230 is available in black and the 6230i in silver, or silver-black. This is a classic style phone that won't easily lose its appeal. It is one of the smallest units Nokia has produced.
Value for money: The Nokia 6230 is very good value for money. An all-purpose phone that attracts anyone who is looking for a good mid-category phone.
