Ebooks from the public library

9. October, 2004

In many countries, public libraries may not be renowned for having enough high-tech gear to satisfy information-hungry or romance-craving readers' hopes for instant delivery of books. At home, however, avid readers have been able to purchase and download eBooks from the Internet for reading them on the computer. Now, eLib AB (other solutions: ellibs and netLibrary) has helped public libraries in Sweden provide eBooks for loan on computers and on mobile devices. Anyone with a Swedish library card can download eBook reader software and an eBook to a mobile device or to a computer from the library and enjoy them right away. The loaned eBook must be read within 28 days before it expires.

Full-length books may not be the easiest way to begin enjoying literature in electronic format. Short stories or articles would be easier to digest on a small screen of a mobile device, but libraries can only offer what is available for them. All in all, this eBook loaning system leads by example by offering a choice to use mobile devices for reading - just think of penny-pinching students around the world, mothers nursing their children at home, or audiences in developing countries who get easy access to information through a system like this.
