Nokia N900 smartphone is a pocket-size Linux computer / 27.08.2009 07:52

Nokia N900
Today will be remembered as the day when Nokia indirectly unveiled a big change into its smartphone software strategy. Linux-based Maemo is likely to become the operating system for high-end devices while Symbian S60 software is likely to be the choice for low-end devices. The quick adoption of touch screen devices has been a decisive factor for the change. From the beginning, Maemo was designed as a touch screen software, while Symbian S60 was originally designed for single-handed use with a numeric keypad. Also, Nokia already has a decent track record with Maemo touch screen devices, like the N800 and N810.

In any case, the Nokia N900 is a powerful smartphone, or a pocket-size PC with in-built mobile phone, depending on the angle where you are looking at the product. The large touch screen on the N900 allows scrolling menus and pages like the Apple iPhone. Although there's no multitouch capability, Nokia has created some clever tricks to the software. For instance, when viewing a photo, you can zoom in by circling clockwise and zoom out by circling the other way. Let's make one thing clear for those people who think the Nokia N900 is a tablet device like the earlier Maemo products. No. The N900 is a compact smartphone-size touch screen device with slide-out qwerty keyboard. Yet, its dimensions are still only 111x60x18 mm.

The Nokia N900 is a quad-band GSM and tri-band 3G UMTS mobile phone, which means it will connect to a mobile network almost anywhere in the world. In addition to the 3G data connectivity, Wi-Fi provides high-speed Internet access. The touch sensitive screen is 3.5 inches in size and 800x480 pixels in resolution. 5 megapixel digital camera can record videos at up to 848 × 480 pixels and up to 25 frames per second. GPS with Ovi Maps application provides location information and navigation. USB, Bluetooth, FM transmitter, TV output port, and a 3.5mm AV connector are included. The N900 has 1GB of internal memory space for applications, 32GB of storage space for photos and stuff, and there's a microSD memory card slot for additional items.

The retail price for the Nokia N900 is expected to be around 500 euros before possible operator subsidies or market-specific taxes. Check out the video below for the touch screen and the size of the device.
