Arcade games for the Google Android Smartphone

One of the most exciting things about the new Google Android smartphone operating system, as employed by phones such as the HTC Magic (available with a contract from Vodafone UK) is the sheer number of games that are available for the platform. Although the majority of these are of the puzzle game variety, there are a number of cool arcade-style games available too. Here are just a few of the better recent examples:

HTC Magic for Vodafone

Fishy Fishy Lite

The object of this aquatic arcade game is to make your little fish into the biggest fish in the tank by eating other fish. Every time you eat a fish, your character grows in size, allowing you to eat larger and larger fish as the game progresses, but if you bump into a fish that is bigger than you, then you will be eaten by it and you will lose a life.

The fish is controlled with the trackball, which is reasonably responsive, although if you try to go fast in one direction your fish has a nasty habit of turning round briefly, which can make it hard to swim out of a tight spot. Also, it can take a while for the smaller fish to appear when you first play the game, which can mean that it takes a little while to really get going with it. Overall, this is a highly enjoyable game, marred only slightly by a few control and gameplay issues, but given that it is a free download, you can hardly complain. Recommended.

Super Jack

If you ever played the classic 8 bit arcade classic Bomb Jack, then you’ll be familiar with this 21st century mobile gaming remake by mAPPn. The aim of the game is to fly down Wall Street collecting coins and speed boosters whilst avoiding road blocks. You control Jack by pushing the track ball in to make speed up and fly higher, and releasing it to slow him down and lose altitude.

The graphics are rather nifty, the scrolling is smooth, and the controls are nice and responsive, making this a rather enjoyable addition to the 2D flying game genre that is well worth a download. The full version of Super Jack is available from the Android Market for a mere 79p, and you can also download a demo version for free from the same place.

ufoHunter

The aim of the 2D space shooter game is to guide your spaceship through an asteroid field whilst shooting down UFOs. The game utilises a novel control system that can take a little bit of getting used to, but it is at least quite responsive once you get the hang of it. Your ammunition is limited, which makes accurate aiming and ammunition conservation crucial to your success, which adds an extra element to an already unusual shoot-em-up. You can get a free demo version, or the full version for only £1.25 from the Android Market.

Try Vodafone's online shop for the Android and a whole range of mobile phones.
