Rugged phone from Nokia survives water, dust, shocks and golf clubs / 10.07.2009 04:31
Mobile phones that survive drops and can stand water and dust have been around for a while, but for a price. For instance, the Land Rover S1, Samsung B2700 or the Sonim XP3 are operational even after pretty bad beating, but not everyone who has needed one, has been to able afford the premium price for a rugged phone. Nokia, who already has a large selection of feature-rich, low-cost phones, has now added a rugged outdoors model to its lineup.
The Nokia 3720 Classic mobile phone has been exclusively designed for rough outdoors and indoors conditions. The product doesn't shine with plenty of hardware or software features, but it has a number of basic things that makes it usable, like 2 megapixel camera that can capture video and 2.2-inch color display in 320x240 resolution.
If you have to move around in pitch black darkness, some mobile phone displays reflect so much light that you can see a thing or two simply by pushing a button on the keypad, but the 3720 comes with an extra source of light; torch. An external GPS device can be hooked up to the phone via Bluetooth in order to provide location information to the preinstalled Ovi Maps application.
Video player and MP3 player can entertain the phone owner and if extra entertainment is required. Java and Flash Lite applications can downloaded to the device as well.
The Nokia 3720 Classic is a tri-band GSM phone with GPRS and EDGE data communication capability. Well, usually there are no 3G networks outside the main roads and towns, anyway. Web browser and email applications are bundled with the phone. The expected retail price for the Nokia 3720 is around 125 euros for an unlocked, SIM-free phone.
