Netbook PC disintegrates into a touch screen Tablet PC 06.07.2009 07:18
If you need both a small netbook PC and a tablet PC with touch screen in one product, the choices are few. We have discovered a few laptop PCs with touch screens whose display unit can be twisted around and placed on top of the keyboard. For example, the 12-inch HP tx2000 and the 5.6-inch Fujitsu U810 can be used both as a laptop and as a tablet. Now, new company Always Innovating has created a new technique for converting a laptop computer into a tablet PC; detachable display.
The Touch Book by Always Innovating is a netbook PC with unique twist; the display can be detached from the rest of the unit. After removing the display, things get even more exciting. The display can be used as a tablet without having the keyboard around at all. This means that all PC electronics are located in the display unit. In any case, the touch sensitive display is 8.9 inches in size and 1024x600 in resolution. Without a hard drive, the unit is light and also provides long battery life. The manufacturer claims 10 hours battery life for the netbook configuration. Instead of hard drive, the Touch Book uses 8GB SD memory card as its mass storage. Lack of hard drive provides longer battery life and light weight, but it also means that there is no space to run Windows operating system software. The Touch Book is built on OpenEmbedded Linux software which has helped the company keep the product price reasonable.
The Touch Book netbook/tablet PC is always switched on; ready to be used whenever you want to access movies, music, email or other things from the Internet or from a home network server. A number of hardware and software features has been fitted into the product. There's Wi-Fi for wireless Internet access, Bluetooth, six USB ports, speakers, and microphone and headphone connectors. Always Innovating has ported software products that allow browsing the web, viewing YouTube videos, opening PDF documents, among others, to the device.
Initially, the Touch Book is available in two configurations. The list price for netbook configuration with keyboard and display is USD 399 and for tablet configuration (display only) USD 299.
