- alex 14:25 19-02-2009 The lock works great, and you do *NOT* need to buy the Schlage bridge or pay the Schlage monthly service. Vera, from Mi Casa Verde, fully supports the Schlage locks, uses the same level of security, also supports remote access from web and cell phone, does everything the Schlage bridge does and MUCH MORE (see: http://wiki.micasaverde.com/index.php/Side_By_Side_Comparison). And there is *NO* mandatory subscription fee. Through 3/31/09 Mi Casa Verde is giving everyone who buys Vera + the Schlage LiNK a lifetime subscription to their online hosted services as well, which is normally $199. You save $100 by buying the Schlage lock without their bridge, plus $150/year by not using their subscription, and $199 from Mi Casa Verde. See: http://micasaverde.com/schlage_promo.php This makes it more affordable, and you get a real, full-featured home control system that supports all Z-Wave devices and does energy monitoring too.

The stylish Nokia 6700 Classic has GPS and high-speed 3G network access / News 04:56 30-01-2009

Every manufacturer would love to design a product that is cheap to produce but would have so many features that it could be marketed at a good price. Nokia is one of the few electronics companies that can try it. For instance, the Nokia 6700 Classic mobile phone has pretty powerful features, but its list price, 235 euros (unlocked, without taxes), is still reasonable.
The Nokia 6700 Classic has built-in GPS receiver that works together with the included Nokia Maps navigation software. You can find your exact location on a map, find places, and let the system guide to your destination using the step-by-step navigation feature (this costs a little extra). The phone's 5 megapixel camera can capture quality videos in 640x480 resolution. Internet access, email, Windows Messenger, web browsing are available as well. The 6700 Classic is a quad-band GSM phone and tri-band 3G phone for UMTS/WCDMA networks. The high-speed HSDPA mobile data communication capability makes music and video uploads and downloads fast. -
Nokia 6303 Classic comes with Maps / News 04:22 30-01-2009

The Nokia 6303 Classic is an all-round mobile phone for affordable price. When in stores, Nokia expects the product to cost about 135 euros (unlocked, without taxes). It comes with 3.2 megapixel camera, 2.2-inch 320x240 resolution 16 million color screen, video recording, music player, FM radio, Bluetooth, and USB. Nokia has managed to fit the Maps application and maps into the phone. It is pretty well done, because the phone is built on the S40 software. The 6303 Classic doesn't have a built-in GPS receiver. An external GPS unit must be purchased for step-by-step navigation and positioning.
The Nokia 6303 Classic is a tri-band GSM phone that can connect to EDGE networks for data access. It means that downloading or sending photos or music via the mobile network can be slow. Although the phone doesn't have 3G network access, email, MMS, and web browsing in Opera Mini work fine over EDGE. -
Amazing number of features on the low-cost Nokia 2700 Classic phone / News 03:51 30-01-2009

It is amazing how many features Nokia can include in a mobile phone targeted at the low-cost product category. The Nokia 2700 Classic is a compact, candy bar-style phone that has plenty of features for music and messaging. For example, 2 megapixel camera, video recording, FM radio, music player with MP3, AAC, and WMA support. The phone has 2-inch, 320x240 resolution color screen. USB port, Bluetooth and memory card can be used for local data transfer. Three color choices are available; black, red, and grey. Email, text messaging, MMS, Opera Mini web browser, and Windows Live Messenger can take the phone owner to the Internet. Additional Java and Flash Lite applications can be downloaded to the phone.
Nokia expects the list price for the 2700 Classic to be around 65 euros, unlocked.
If operators haven't built a 3G network around your neighborhood, the Nokia 2700 Classic is good value for you, because you are not paying for 3G hardware or software components inside the phone. The 2G quad-band GSM phone comes with GPRS data communication capability, without EDGE. The phone's memory capability is limited 64MB, but photos and music can be stored on a memory card. -
Monitor your home door locks and people who use them remotely from a mobile phone / News 00:57 29-01-2009

Often, home security is improved by installing video cameras, new locks, hiring guards, or training the family pet dog to keep the home intact. A system that allows monitoring who has entered the house and who has left the house brings even more peace of mind for the home owner.
Schlage has developed an electronic door lock that can be managed remotely. All you need is a mobile phone. The Schlage Link lets you lock and unlock your home doors from your mobile phone. The system can also send you a text message when someone has entered the house, for instance, for ensuring that everyone has returned safely from school. The system is compatible with most mobile phones independent of the brand. The mobile phone only needs to be Internet-capable.
The system setup is as follows. The door lock has wireless (Z-Wave) connection to the Schlage Link Bridge device (included with the product). The Bridge is connected to the home broadband router. The router communicates with Schlage service. Now, when you want to view the status of your home lock, you logon to the Schlage service that requests the status from the home lock system. This is why you have to subscribe to a service from Schlage the manages the communication between home and remote devices. It is also possible to hook u -

Pharos may not be one of the most widely mobile phone brands, because it is better known as a GPS device vendor. The new smartphone model, Pharos Traveler 137 comes with a GPS receiver and huge touch screen. The touch sensitive display is 3.5-inches in size with 800x480 -pixel resolution. Wow, it is almost the same resolution as the tiniest netbook PCs have.
The Pharos Traveler 137 is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system. The feature list is long; GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM radio, microSD memory card, USB, and 3 megapixel camera. Back up data from a mobile phone to a secure account on the Internet / News 05:30 26-01-2009
It is a good idea to back up information stored on a mobile phone. Backing up to a PC, however, tends to be a hassle because the PC has to be switched on, a data cable must be found, and the PC application must be started. We regularly backup phone data, and our experience strongly favors online services. You know, you create an account on a service, and backup the phone wherever and whenever you want without cables or other hassle.
Vufone is a new service that consists of an application that is downloaded to the phone and of an online account where the personal data from the phone is stored. Vufone can back up contacts, messages, calendar, and photos. It can also sync the phone with Google Calendar and Gmail Contacts. Photos and videos can be uploaded to a Vufone account as well. The service has a connection to Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, and Picasa.
Another popular sync service for mobile phones is Zyb, which works on devices that come with SyncML software (SyncML is an industry standard for syncing data over the air between a mobile device and a network service).
Vufone application that is downloaded to the phone is implemented in Java, making it compatible with hundreds of mobile phone models from Nokia, Samsung, LG, Motorola, Sony Ericsson HTC, and others. The application runs on Symbian, Windows Mobile and other operating systems. Vufone -
Mini-laptop PC from the pioneer of portable MP3 and multimedia players / News 05:28 26-01-2009

Archos is one of the pioneers in the business of pocket-size portable MP3 and multimedia players. In fact, the company is one of the few manufacturers that has also created handheld recorder/players that can record TV shows and videos onto the device's own hard drive. For instance, we are still using a relatively old but trusty MP3 player/recorder/photo storage/video player device Archos 402 for listening to music, and above all, to record interviews of people who matter.
In addition to the multimedia player/recorder products, Archos has started a whole new product line; netbooks, mini-laptops, or whatever you want to call the small and cute PCs that are useful for messaging, media viewing, blogging, music, and other things. The Archos 10 is a small Windows XP notebook PC that comes with 10.2-inch screen (1024x600 pixels) and a full qwerty keyboard.
A 160GB hard drive stores media files and documents. Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and 3 USB ports let you connect the netbook to the Internet and hook up peripherals. A built-in 1.3 megapixel webcam works with Skype and other applications. The Archos 10 includes a valuable software bundle. Lotus Symphony, Antivirus, vTuner TV viewer, image editing, -
Touch screen phone can save GPS location in photos with audio and notes / News 04:28 23-01-2009

Increasingly, high-end smartphones come with built-in GPS receivers for navigation and for saving locations for photos taken with the phone's own camera. Typically, photos are then uploaded to Google Earth or Flickr for viewing them on a shared map. Smartphone manufacturer HTC has enhanced the so called geotagging concept to cover audio and written notes as well.
The HTC Touch Cruise is a compact and stylish smartphone with touch sensitive screen and GPS receiver. Yes, there are plenty of mobile devices with those features, even from HTC, but this product comes with Footprint application. In addition to saving location information in photos, it lets you add your own voice clips and written notes into the photos. The Footprint can record your memories for viewing and listening to them later. Other features in the HTC Touch Cruise are 3.2 megapixel camera, 2.8-inch 320x240 resolution display, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, and microSD memory card slot. It is a quad-band GSM phone and dual band 3G phone with high-speed HSDPA network access.
Be careful when you check out this product at stores. There are two models of the HTC Touch Cruise available with the same name. The difference is that the old model doesn't have Footprint application, wherea -
Free and low-cost international phone calls for the T-Mobile G1 / News 06:07 22-01-2009

T-Mobile G1 is the first smartphone that is powered by an exceptional operating system; the Google Android Linux software. In the spirit of open source software, the G1 and the included software is almost open as well. However, major service providers have so much power that they can lock down parts of an open system. In the spirit of protectionism, T-Mobile has locked the G1 to its own network only. Nonetheless, it is possibe to find alternative ways to make phone calls. Here is one option; Truphone.
Truphone is a free application that runs on many smartphones, like the iPhone and Nokia's Symbian OS/S60 phones. As a true VoIP (voice over Internet) application, Truphone lets you make free phone calls to other Truphone users. Calls to mobile numbers and landlines are cheap. International calls are worth of a local phone call. Just make sure you have a data subscription plan that allows you to download and upload plenty of data.
Truphone also connects you to MSN, Yahoo, and Google Talk instant messaging systems. Those who use Twitter-microblogging service can post new tweets from Truphone. Connection to Skype is on its way as well. Wrist watch phone lets you access email, picture messages / News 06:07 22-01-2009
Many people across the world have driven a Huyndai car - we have even leased one, and were pretty happy with the experience. After driving a Hyundai car, it may feel a bit odd to wear a wrist watch or use a Hyundai-branded mobile phone. Well, maybe it helps if the wrist watch and mobile phone are one and the same product.
The Hyundai MB-910 wrist watch phone is a stylish-looking product with some exciting features. A stylus is included for accessing phone menus via the 132x176 resolution color touch screen. It is possible to connect a Bluetooth headset to the phone for more convenient phone calls (than holding the watch phone against the ear).
There are three pretty ambitious features on the phone; WAP, email, and MMS. It means that you can access WAP services and WAP pages from the phone. Sending and reading email messages is worth trying out, but the tiny 1.5-inch screen requires sharp eyes. The phone's color screen can display 65000 colors, making picture messages (MMS) a nice touch on the phone. The Hyundai MB-910 is tri-band GSM phone with GPRS data connectivity (it should be fine for accidental email access). -
Securitas personal security services for GPS smartphones / News 04:05 20-01-2009

Small portable devices that have built-in GPS receiver and GSM phone are becoming popular products for tracking vehicles, people, and pets. We have reviewed a number of such devices, like the Tramigo T22 and Haicom HI-602DT. When these tracking devices are used for security, they are convenient for the person who is being tracked, but they require skills and work from the person who wants to monitor someone else's whereabouts.
Securitas, a large security services company operating in Europe and North America, has created an application for smartphones that extends the company's security services to individuals. The service consists of an application and a security service package. The Safe-2-Go application is downloaded onto a Symbian OS/S60 smartphone, like a Nokia, LG, or Samsung product that has built-in GPS receiver. Once the application is installed, it can get the exact location coordinates from the GPS receiver and communicate with Securitas service center via mobile phone.
Initially, the security service provides four functions. Assist: connect to Securita -
Touch screen phone from LG in pink or black, the KP500 Cookie / News 01:15 19-01-2009

We haven't tallied up the numbers yet, but we believe LG or HTC has been the most active manufacturer of mobile phones that come with touch screen. Although touch-sensitive display is one of the most expensive components in a mobile phone, LG is trying to push the product price down, even further down than Nokia with its 5800 XpressMusic. The LG KP500, also known as the Cookie, is a reasonably-priced alternative to high-end touchscreen phones. The LG KP500 has large 3-inch touch screen that can recognize handwriting when the included stylus is used for entering text.

The phone has 3 megapixel camera, FM radio, Bluetooth, USB, microSD memory card slot, and it can run Java applications. Feature-wise, it is a pretty basic GSM phone with GPRS and EDGE 2G data connectivity. In addition to the large 240x400 resolution touch screen, the most exciting thing with the LG KP500 is that it is also available in pink. It is always nice to find some other colors than silver or black in mobile phones. After all, we look at our phones maybe hundreds of times each day. Another low- -
How to turn a smartphone into a heart rate monitor and fitness tracker / News 00:56 17-01-2009

Many mobile phone owners like to take their phones along for a walk, for a jog in the park, for cycling in the mountains, or for another exercise. A smartphone is a handy device for helping exercise because the most advanced models come with GPS, good camera, and a capability to run a software product that can provide valuable information about with the exercise. Nokia and Polar have created a product package, called Nokia N79 Active, that contains the Nokia N79 smartphone and Polar Bluetooth WearLink heart rate measurement unit. An armband is also included for firmly attaching the phone around an arm (the heart rate belt is worn around the chest).
What really makes the whole product bundle tick is the Nokia Sports Tracker application running on the N79 phone. The application is free to download, available for Nokia N-series smartphones. It requires a built-in or external GPS receiver so that it can measure distance and speed. You can find more information about the Nokia N79 in this review. It is a compact, powerful smartphone with features, such as GPS, 5 megapixel camera, and high-speed 3G Internet a -
Wayfinder GPS navigation software and receiver bundle / News 01:07 16-01-2009
We have tried out many navigation products that can be used on a smartphone. Which is the best? Well, it depends on the requirements. Do you want street navigation when driving, or topo maps and a pointer to magnetic north?
For navigation on roads, we have liked Nokia Maps (check out our review) and Wayfinder (see the review) the best. Wayfinder is now offering its software for mobile phones and GPS receiver that you can hook up to phone via Bluetooth as special, low-price bundle. For instance, in the UK the product is GBP 59.99. You may check out the price for your country here. -
Access your hard drive at home remotely from a PC or iPhone via the Internet / News 01:20 14-01-2009

External hard drives that are easy to plug in to a USB port are handy for backing up data from home PC and for storing large files like movies and music. But the more we document our lives as digital memories in photographs, videos, MP3 tracks, and other files, the more we miss them while we are away from home. How to access the files that are safely stored on the home hard drive when in the office, at the school, or traveling? Simple; the hard drive has to be connected to the Internet.
Pogoplug is a small device that can connect your external hard drive to the Internet. First, you hook up your USB hard drive to the Pogoplug device. Then, you connect the Pogoplug to your broadband access point (cable modem or ASDL modem). Lastly, you create an account on the Pogoplug Internet service. Everything you have stored on your USB hard drive is now available to you anywhere where you can access the Internet. You only need a PC or a mobile device with Web browser software, like the iPhone or another smartphone. Files on the hard drive can shared to friends as well. The initial price for Pogoplug is $79.
Other solutions for sharing files from the home archive to the Internet are, for instance, the free Orb software or 10 megapixel camera lets you upload photos to the Internet by a touch on the screen / News 00:33 13-01-2009
There are enough megapixels for all of us in modern digital cameras. Now, making cameras even easier to use and copying pictures and photos from the camera to a home PC and to the Internet are getting plenty of attention. The small Sony Cybershot DSC-G3 camera is one of the first products that features both Wi-Fi connectivity and touch screen menu system. It means that you can upload photos directly to the Internet, for instance, to Picasa album from the camera. It is also possible to post videos captured with the camera to YouTube. You can use your home Wi-Fi access point or other hotspot to upload images.
The Sony Cybershot DSC-G3 has 10 megapixel image sensor, 4x optical zoom, image stabilization, face detection, smile shutter, ISO sensitivity up to 3200, MPEG video capture in 640x480 30fps, 4GB of built-in memory, Memory Stick Duo memory card slot, and HDTV output. -
Camera phone from Sony Ericsson can detect faces in the frame and upload videos to YouTube / News 04:30 12-01-2009

We are delighted that camera phone vendors are not only focused on growing the number of megapixels in their products anymore, but are developing features and technology that improve the image quality as well. A typical today's camera phone can capture 2 to 5 megapixel pictures, which is enough for most people. Sony has been able to apply some of its Cyber-shot technology to camera phones, which may have been one of the reasons Sony Ericsson phones have ranked high in many image quality comparison tests.
The Sony Ericsson C510 is a 3.2 megapixel camera phone with a number of useful features that help take better pictures. Particularly, sharper images of people. The C510 has Smile Shutter (a technology that can detect when a person in frame is smiling and then it takes a picture), Face Detection (auto-focusing technology that can find up to three faces in a frame and lock on to them), upload to Snapfish (order print outs of photos and have them delivered home), upload to YouTube (recorded videos can be uploaded instantly from the phone), Photo Fix (adjust light balance, brightness and contrast simultaneously), and autofocus. The product is available in black and silver. The C510 is a tri-band GSM phone with UMTS 3G and high-spe -
A wrist watch that can tell parents exactly where the child is / News 01:24 12-01-2009

Parents worry about their children's safety, no matter what. If modern technology can ease the anxiety even a little bit, it is worth checking out. The Num8 GPS device from Loc8u is a wrist watch that is connected to GSM mobile phone network. As a child wearing the watch is running around the neighborhood, the built-in GPS receiver knows exactly where he or she is. Since the Num8 also has built-in GSM network connectivity, the watch can send the location information to the Loc8u Internet service. Parents can logon to their personal account for viewing a map that displays the child's whereabouts. Safety areas can be defined for alerting parents if the child strays outside the predefined virtual borders. If the watch is removed from the wrist, the device can send an alert as well.
Currently, the Num8 GPS tracker watch is available in the UK. In addition to the device, a monthly service subscription is required.
There are similar products that don't require a monthly service subscription. Typically, these products send a text message with numeric coordinates to a mobile number, or it is possible to dial to the GPS device and ask where it is. A PC or mobile phone application is a handy tool for requesting the coordinates and displaying the position on a map. The The first OLED display on a handheld PC that runs Vista and fits into pocket / News 04:28 10-01-2009
There are smartphones, MP3 multimedia players and Internet tablets that are roughly about the same size as the OQO model 2+ handheld PC. OQO has managed to squeeze an amazing number of features into a small 5-inch screen PC whose physical dimensions are 5.6"(W) x 3.3"(H) x 1.0"(D) .
The OQO model 2+ display is built using OLED technology. If you haven't seen an OLED display, we can tell you the technology beats anything in brightness and contrast we have seen so far. The OQO display is also a touch-sensitive, making use of Windows Vista's built-in touch screen software. Qwerty keyboard slides under the screen. The handheld PC can be configured with a hard drive or 60GB solid state drive (SSD). The OQO model 2+ has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but the really exceptional feature is dual mobile network connectivity. The device can connect to 3G EV-DO (CDMA based networks that, for instance, Verizon or Sprint have) and 3G UMTS (GSM based networks across the world) networks. OQO model 2+ prices start from $999. -
Touch screen smartphone from Motorola for surfing the Internet and multimedia / News 07:30 09-01-2009

Motorola was one of the first companies to introduce a touch screen smartphone years ago, but the Ming was aimed primarily at the Chinese market. Another pioneering technology in the Ming was Linux software. Things have changed since then, with the Apple iPhone pushing all phone manufacturers to design touch screen products. Now, Motorola has introduced a touch screen smartphone for the rest of us, the Motorola Motosurf A3100.
The smartphone is somewhat larger (11cm tall and 6cm wide) than an average candybar-style phone, encouraging Motorola to call it a tablet for surfing the Internet. We wouldn't go that far because the device is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system that Motorola has complemented with its own touch screen software. The home screen is customizable. The 320x240 resolution display can be tapped with a finger or stylus and a trackball is available as well.
The Motorola A3100 is a quad-band GSM phone and tri-band 3G WCDMA/UMTS phone with high-speed HSDPA data communication capability. Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, USB 2.0 are included as well. Web browser allows viewing HTML pages and reading RSS Newsfeeds. 3 megap -
Skype is compatible with hundreds of ordinary mobile phones that can run Java software / News 07:28 09-01-2009

Skype has continued to delight PC users for many years because they have been able to enjoy free international phone calls or at least, low-cost phone calls (anywhere in the world at local prices). The clever application has been available to select high-end smartphones as well, but it hasn't been possible to run Skype on ordinary mobile phones. Until now. Skype has created a light version of its software that runs on phones that are compatible with Java software. It means hundreds of compatible phone models from all brands. You can download the free software here.
The trick with the light version of Skype is that phone calls are not free. Not even calls to other Skype users. When you want to dial someone (Skype name, landline, or mobile number), the software asks your permission to make an ordinary phone call to a local number. From there on, the call is routed like a Skype call. A call to Skype user is worth a usual phone call. You need Skype credits to reach mobile and landline numbers or if you want to receive calls in the Skype application.
Skype Chat, or Instant Messaging, is practically free to use. You must, however -

Practically without an exception, Sony Ericsson Walkman phones for music and multimedia have been stylish and snappy products. The Sony Ericsson W508 continues the proven path of MP3 player phones with a new twist. The covers are replaceable. There is one extra Style Up cover plate in the product box. The W508 has 3.2 megapixel camera, YouTube viewer, FM radio, pedometer software, stereo Bluetooth, USB, email, Web browser, and plenty of other features. The W508 is a quad-band GSM phone and 3G UMTS/WCDMA phone with high-speed HSDPA Internet access.

If a new driver or a new putter doesn't help a serious golfer to better results, it is time to make use of modern technology. A wrist watch device, the Suunto G6, is available to help analyze the consistency of the swing. That's fine, but we are not sure if it helps on the course anymore. It might be better to analyze the swing at the driving range before even booking the tee time.
If you are a tech-loving golfer, don't worry; Garmin has announced an exciting product for golfers. The Garmin Approach G5 is a handheld GPS device that can measure exact distances on the golf course. You may even plan ahead your game. Display a map of the hole you are about to start. Touch the spot on the screen you were planning to target. The Approach G5 shows you distances between you and the target spot and from there to the flag. Check out the video, it is pretty amazing.
The handheld device has 3-inch color screen that is touch sensitive. The product comes with thousands of maps for courses in the United States. There are no extra charges or subscription fees, only the price for the product itself (Garmin's list price is $499). -
Beautiful wide-screen format netbook PC from Sony / News 04:56 08-01-2009

The Asus Eee PC started a new trend for mini-laptop PCs that are small (from 7 to 10-inch screen size) and light (some models come without a hard drive and may have a small battery). We have followed our readers' interest in these new ultra-portable notebooks, and have noticed that the Acer Aspire One and HP 2133 Mini-Note PC have attracted most readers. But it was the situation before Sony entered the netbook PC market.
The Sony Vaio P Series Lifestyle PC is a small and beautiful mini-notebook that features a 8-inch wide-screen display. The display in 1600x768 pixel resolution is so wide that it leaves space for a decent keyboard. GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G mobile network are included. The basic configuration comes with 2GB of RAM, 60GB hard drive and 4 hour battery. The hard drive can be upgraded to large flash memory storage, and it is possible to get double-size battery for double battery life. The Sony Vaio P series Lifestyle netbook runs on Windows Vista -

A digital picture frame that fits into pocket 00:54 05-01-2009

Digital picture frames are like traditional photo frames, except for the number of images they can hold and display. Typically, a digital photo frame has its own storage space where you copy the photos from your PC you want to display in the living room or on an office desk. You can have a continuous slide show of holiday photos or show only the best wedding shot in the frame. Different types of digital photo frames exist, like the Ceiva models that can receive new photos automatically from the Internet, the Parrot DF7700 where images can be sent directly from camera phones, or hundreds of other picture frames that accept many types of memory cards.
This digital photo frame is something else. It is so small that it can be used as a key chain. Yes, the Coby DP151 is a digital picture frame whose display is 1.5 inches in size. Yet, the color LCD screen can display JPG, GIF, and BMP images. You can store 60 photos to the tiny device. The photos are copied from a PC (Windows XP, Vista, or Mac) to the frame via USB connection. It comes with a rechargeable battery. The physical dimensions of the unit are 3 x 2 x 3 inches. It is such a low price and working product that many users are willing to forgive shortcomings in its software. -
