Motorola Rokr E8 Music Phone Is a Smart MP3 Player

June 18, 2008

As a GSM mobile phone, the Motorola Rokr E8 may not break new ground, but as an MP3 player and music phone, it is a smart device. The product comes with a new kind of haptic keypad that tells you what you can do by lighting up relevant keys only. The keys are touch-sensitive, although there's no touch screen. The slim, dark unit looks good and lets you take 2 megapixel photos as well.

The front panel is built on the Motorola's ModeShift technology. It has three smart innovations. First, when you have chosen what you want to do, for instance, listen to the music, the phone deactivates all keys that can't be used while the playback is on. Naturally, you can answer phone calls regardless what is going on in the phone. Second, you don't have guess which buttons you can use. Lights on the dark front panel clearly indicate what you can do. The lights looks brilliant on the dark bavkgground. Third, the keys are not physical keys that you have to push. They are haptic keys that you only have to touch. This technology makes it possible to activate and deactivate buttons on the fly.

As far as features are concerned, it is important to keep in mind that the Rokr E8 has been designed for music playback. The touch wheel and the playback buttons on the front panel reflect the design focus. The music phone doesn't have any high-speed Internet connectivity, or maps with navigation features. Bloggers or email junkies should also look for other choices. The point is that if you are looking for a stylish phone with unique key light system and don't want to carry an iPod around, the Rokr E8 is worth checking out.
